The Physical Evidence

Hello! Thanks for reading my blog! I am new to the idea and practice of blogging. I have my friend Emily (www.emmyredneck.blogspot.com) to thank for getting me up and going.

I have an issue that has been close to my heart for many years now--parenting a bi-racial child. Now after almost 13 years of raising my perfectly brown child, I have completely forgotten he is any color at all--much less obviously darker than I am. Only when someone reminds me of this fact do I come back to the idea. I don't see the color of my son, but others do....as I am reminded more frequently than I ever thought I would be. See, he and I were cut from the same cookie cutter....we look IDENTICAL except that he is a boy and I am a girl. One may say that he was immaculately conceived by me as there is no evidence that he even has another parent. Our eyes, nose, face shape, toes, personality and even our expressions match like clones. The only difference is that, if we were in fact cut from the same cookie cutter--then I am a sugar cookie and he is a gingerbread man. Apparently the baker forgot which cutter to use on which batch of cookie dough!

With silliness aside, I was naive to the fact that in 2010 people would still be acting like they just saw a bi-racial person for the first time. I hope that this blog will be a place we can share our stories to support each other and educate others!! So kiss your bi-racial child and get talking!

  1. Thinking back, I can't honestly remember if I noticed his color or not. I do remember being struck by how handsome he was though. He's really a good lookin kid! And anybody in their right mind, even if they did notice, would forget his 'color' after spending 2 minutes with him. You done good, Shae.
